Freiburg secured their tenth straight UEFA Europa League (UEL) home victory by comfortably defeating Celta Vigo 3-0 at the Europa-Park Stadion, putting them in a strong position as they head into the second leg of the quarter-final tie next week.
It was a historic moment for Freiburg, as this marked their first appearance in the quarter-finals of a UEFA tournament, achieved through a resounding 5-2 aggregate win over Genk in the previous round. Following a narrow loss to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich—where they conceded two goals in injury time to lose 3-2—Freiburg were eager to right the wrongs of that match, dominating the first half against their Spanish counterparts.
Igor Matanovic initiated the action with a header that went over the crossbar within the first two minutes, before Maximilian Eggestein unleashed a powerful shot that was well saved by Ionut Radu.
Within ten minutes, the Breisgau Brazilians took the lead through their talisman. Vincenzo Grifo, the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, demonstrated his prowess by curling a strike into the bottom corner from outside the box.
Celta enjoyed a fair share of possession but struggled to convert it into genuine threats. Their failure to capitalise on this allowed Freiburg to double their lead just past the half-hour mark. Matanovic, instead of shooting from a tight angle, displayed remarkable foresight by passing to Jan-Niklas Beste, who simply had to tap the ball in from close range.
Freiburg could have extended their lead further before half-time if not for Johan Manzambi’s effort, which narrowly missed the target, striking the post.
After the break, while Freiburg continued to look threatening, they could not replicate the same quality of chances, with Grifo’s low shot from distance easily dealt with by Radu.
Before this match, Celta had been the highest-scoring team in the competition, yet Freiburg’s impressive defence rendered them ineffective. In fact, Celta did not register a single shot on target throughout the match, their closest attempt being Fer Lopez’s first-time shot that skimmed past the post.
Freiburg put the game beyond doubt with a third goal just under 15 minutes from the end, as Matthias Ginter headed in from a corner.
With this victory, Freiburg is now well-placed to advance to their second semi-final of the season, already having secured a spot in the final four of the DFB Pokal.
In contrast, Celta experienced their first defeat in nine away matches across all competitions and will need a significantly better performance in Spain next week if they hope to reach the UEL semi-finals for only the second time in their history.
