On Thursday, CONMEBOL, the governing body of South American football, officially endorsed Gianni Infantino for his potential bid for a fourth term as FIFA president.
While the 56-year-old Infantino has not yet announced his intention to seek re-election for the 2027–2031 term, the CONMEBOL council released a statement declaring it had “unanimously expressed its support” for his leadership ahead of any potential candidacy.
“We extend our sincere gratitude to President Gianni Infantino for his ongoing dedication to the progression of South American football, as well as his global leadership,” stated Alejandro Dominguez, the President of CONMEBOL.
“We greatly appreciate your strong ties to our region and your vision for advancing the sport on an international scale.”
CONMEBOL stands as the first federation to back Infantino’s re-election.
Assuming office in 2016 after Sepp Blatter, Infantino was re-elected unopposed in both 2019 and 2023.
During his time in office, Infantino has advocated for the expansion of FIFA competitions, such as this year’s World Cup in North America, which is the first to include 48 teams, while the 2023 women’s tournament grew to feature 32 teams.
However, Infantino’s leadership has faced criticism regarding governance and the increasing congestion of the football calendar.
