Since its inception in 1956, the Eredivisie has been the pinnacle of Dutch football, introducing a professional league to a sport that was largely amateur prior to 1954. Even before this professional era, a national champion was crowned each year.
The Dutch football landscape has long been dominated by the so-called Big Three—Ajax, PSV, and Feyenoord. Collectively, they have claimed 63 of the 69 Eredivisie titles, with Ajax emerging as the leading club, having won 28 titles and a total of 36 Dutch championships.
Only a handful of clubs have interrupted the dominance of this trio: AZ with two titles, FC Twente, Sparta Rotterdam, DWS (currently competing in the eighth tier), and DOS, which folded in 2004.
To commemorate their successes, clubs are entitled to display a star above their badge for every ten Eredivisie titles won. Before 1956, the most successful club was HVV, which won ten league titles between 1891 and 1914, making it the only club outside of the Big Three to wear a star.
