Could PSV Secure Their 27th Eredivisie Title Before Spring?

PSV had the opportunity to clinch the Eredivisie title prematurely in round 28, but that prospect was snatched away by Feyenoord, who managed a draw against Ajax in the storied Klassieker. Compounding PSV’s troubles was a surprising 3-1 defeat to Telstar.

With Feyenoord and Ajax drawing their matches, as well as NEC also being held to a draw, PSV could have positioned themselves superbly for a title win on April 4th. But is it still feasible for them to clinch a record title win?

On track for record achievements

If PSV can maintain their 15-point advantage, they could potentially secure the Eredivisie title as early as Saturday, April 4th, during their 29th round against FC Utrecht. For that to happen, at least one of these scenarios must unfold:

PSV draw: Feyenoord must lose

PSV’s lead will remain at 15 points if Feyenoord matches their result. With a goal difference of +41, PSV leads Feyenoord by a margin of 20 goals, making the gap incredibly tough to close.

Historically, AZ holds the record for the most rounds won in a season, having secured the title in round 28 of the 1980/81 season. However, this record is out of reach for PSV this time around.

In terms of current form, PSV seem to have lost their momentum in recent weeks. The league leaders have won 6 of their last 10 matches, but have slipped in the last couple, conceding 15 goals whilst finding the net 21 times, leaving them with 68 points.

Feyenoord remains in second place, having won only two of their last five outings in the Eredivisie and currently leading the chasing pack by 5 points.

Looking ahead, PSV’s remaining fixtures are relatively favourable. They have already overcome Feyenoord twice this season and will face Ajax away in what could be their toughest remaining match during round 31.
