Robert Lewandowski, the captain of Poland, has suggested he may step back from international football after the team failed to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup, potentially signalling the end of his reign as the national team’s all-time top scorer.
The 37-year-old appeared visibly upset as the final whistle blew, confirming Poland’s exit from the global tournament following a 3-2 loss to Sweden in the qualification play-off final on Tuesday.
Shortly after the defeat in Stockholm, Lewandowski shared a photo of himself exiting the pitch on social media, set to the tune of “Time to Say Goodbye” by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli.
This setback means the Barcelona forward may face the conclusion of an illustrious career without the grand finale he had hoped for after returning to the national squad in August, following a dispute with former coach Michal Probierz.
Despite the circumstances, he played down the importance of his social media post in his remarks after the match, signalling that no definitive decision had been reached.
“I am not in a position to make any declarations. I’ll return to club football; I still have matches to play. I need to resolve the uncertainties in my mind,” he told Polish journalists.
With the next World Cup four years away, this exit represents a poignant moment for the forward from Warsaw, who has been a cornerstone of the national team since making his debut in 2008.
Lewandowski has served as captain since 2014 and holds the records for both goals and appearances for Poland, boasting an impressive 89 goals in 165 international caps.
“As I continue my career, I find myself valuing certain moments more than ever,” Lewandowski remarked earlier in the play-off journey. “I’m not afraid of wrapping up my career, as I am beginning to prepare for it… I recognise it is a significant part of my life, but it is not the entirety.”
