Corinthians midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza received a red card for making an obscene gesture towards an opponent during a Brazilian Serie A match, as VAR intervened after the referee missed him grabbing his groin.
Allan, who joined Liverpool in 2015 but never featured in a competitive match for the club due to a work permit issue, was cautioned in the second half against Fluminense on Wednesday after a dispute with Luciano Acosta.
As the referee turned his back, the 29-year-old directed the inappropriate gesture towards Fluminense’s Kevin Serna.
After being notified by VAR, the referee proceeded to the pitchside monitor to review the footage of the incident before sending Allan off.
Fluminense, who are tied on points with league leaders Palmeiras, secured a 3-1 victory over 11th-placed Corinthians.
