Defending champions Arsenal secured their place in the Women’s Champions League semi-finals with a 3-2 aggregate triumph over Chelsea, despite suffering a 1-0 loss at Stamford Bridge in the second leg of the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Understanding the need to make up ground, Chelsea, who saw their manager Sonia Bompastor receive a red card late in the match, launched a relentless assault from the outset.
However, Arsenal quickly disrupted their momentum, and the home team failed to register a single shot on target during the first half, as the visitors took their time with each set piece.
Arsenal started to find their feet in the second half, but the real excitement unfolded in the closing moments as Chelsea threw everything they had into a bid to turn the match around.
Arsenal substitute Stina Blackstenius nearly struck gold when she headed in from a cross by her fellow Swede Smilla Holmberg in the 80th minute, only for the goal to be disallowed after a VAR check revealed she was marginally offside in the buildup.
Undeterred, Chelsea pressed forward again, and defender Veerle Buurman came agonisingly close, hitting the post with a late effort. Meanwhile, midfielder Sjoeke Nuesken was thwarted by a fantastic save from Arsenal goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar, who managed to tip Nuesken’s header onto the inside of the far post, with the ball eventually bouncing away to safety.
In a dramatic turn of events, Arsenal’s Beth Mead struck the far post with a shot during stoppage time, but it was Nuesken who eventually found the net, sneaking in ahead of defender Lotte Wubben-Moy to fire home a first-time shot in the 94th minute, making for a heart-stopping finish.
As the tension peaked, Arsenal’s Katie McCabe escaped a foul when she appeared to pull Alyssa Thompson’s hair during a counter-attack, sparking an irate reaction that resulted in Bompastor being dismissed from the dugout after earning two yellow cards for her protests.
In the earlier fixture of the evening, Bayern Munich secured a 2-1 victory on the night and a 5-3 aggregate win over Manchester United, advancing to the semi-finals for the first time since 2021.
Arsenal now awaits either Lyon or Wolfsburg in the semi-finals, while Bayern Munich prepares to face Barcelona or Real Madrid, with Barcelona leading 6-2 on aggregate and Wolfsburg holding a tight 1-0 advantage heading into the second leg on Thursday.
