The United States suffered their second defeat in a row before the upcoming FIFA World Cup (WC) this summer, losing 2-0 to a formidable Portuguese side at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mauricio Pochettino was certainly hoping for a more resilient showing following the heavy loss to Belgium over the weekend, with the USMNT fine-tuning their preparations for the forthcoming tournament.
The Americans made a lively start in Atlanta, with Weston McKennie testing Jose Sa with an early shot, while Christian Pulisic had his attempt blocked inside the penalty area.
Portugal soon reminded their opponents of their attacking prowess when Bruno Fernandes found space and unleashed a powerful effort, but Matt Freese managed to dive low and deflect the ball out for a corner.
The match unfolded at a frantic pace, with both teams creating chances. Sebastian Berhalter saw his long-range effort saved, and Pulisic came close with a low drive that just missed the left post.
As the US lamented their missed opportunities, they found themselves trailing by halftime. Fernandes was again influential as he surged into the opposition box, and, showing remarkable awareness, executed a backheel pass to set up Francisco Trincao, who finished with authority.
The second half kicked off with a flurry of substitutions by both managers, resulting in a dip in rhythm as neither team found their flow—quite the opposite of the first half. Goncalo Ramos nearly extended Portugal’s lead when he gathered the ball at the edge of the box, but his curling shot went off target.
However, the Selecao das Quinas did find a second goal just before the hour mark, with another expertly constructed move featuring Fernandes. This time, his corner kick was expertly controlled by Joao Felix, who took a touch before unleashing a powerful, low shot into the net.
After Portugal’s second goal, the visitors maintained control of the match, with Ruben Neves coming close to adding a third with a dipping volley from distance, yet Freese made a crucial save.
Pochettino’s side struggled to contend with the Portuguese onslaught after the break and ultimately fell to consecutive losses during this international window—not the ideal preparations the Argentine coach envisioned ahead of hosting the WC. Conversely, Portugal appear well-prepared and eager under the management of Roberto Martínez.
