The netball crisis in New Zealand has reached a critical juncture, prompting the nation’s sports minister to step in and insist on an urgent resolution to the turmoil affecting the Silver Ferns.
Mark Mitchell has taken aim at the governing body, accusing it of taking “too long” to address the prolonged issues. This comes after the Silver Ferns’ coach was suspended and an interim was appointed, while the team’s performance continued to decline. Their recent matches against Australia have illuminated the high-performance challenges that have been neglected.
Silver Ferns captain Karin Burger openly acknowledges the emotional toll the players have endured during their Constellation Cup campaign against Australia, but at 32 years old, she is confronting the growing external pressures head-on.
A SURPRISING MOVE
Last month, shockwaves echoed through the netball community when the team revealed that Dame Noeline Taurua was to be stood down from her coaching role.

This decision was made just one week before the Taini Jamison series against South Africa, following reports of player complaints regarding the team environment during their January tour in Australia.
Netball NZ conducted a review involving the players, who have not been publicly named.
Despite numerous mediation attempts over the past two months involving Taurua and her coaching staff, a resolution to the players’ concerns remains elusive.
While many hope for a swift conclusion to this saga, New Zealand Sports Minister Mark Mitchell has called for independent oversight to help facilitate a resolution.
“It’s taking far too long, and it’s damaging netball; everyone involved is incredibly passionate about the game,” Mitchell stated to reporters in New Zealand on Thursday.
“I’ve asked the chief executive of Sport NZ to explore any possible avenues or support we can extend … we need to assist in resolving this.”
“The expectation is that it gets sorted out quickly, as the delay has been excessive.
“I’m baffled as to why it has taken this long … They simply need to gather together and sort it out, it’s as straightforward as that.”
THE Significant REPERCUSSIONS
Netball NZ is currently receiving nearly $2 million AUD from High Performance Sport New Zealand to support the Silver Ferns at their international tournaments.
Some NZ MPs have proposed freezing this funding until the coaching situation is resolved, but Mitchell has confirmed that this will not be the case.
A disappointing 68-51 loss to the Australia Diamonds on Wednesday in the second game of the Constellation Cup raised concerns about the team’s state among several legends of the sport.
“It’s evident how heavy the burden is on Karin, not to mention the pressure on Grace Nweke, the Kiwi goal shooter. I truly sympathise with them,” former Diamonds star Bianca Chatfield remarked on Fox Sports.
“They are in an extremely challenging position … I don’t foresee a quick fix.”
THE DISTURBING DECLINE
A mere year ago, the Silver Ferns dominated the Australian Diamonds, clinching their third Constellation Cup title with a 3-1 victory.
Now, Australia is just one win away from reclaiming a title they have held 11 times, with only two matches left in the 2025 edition of the series.

While the Diamonds introduced only three changes to their squad from last year’s series, the Ferns opted for six fresh faces in their line-up.
Nonetheless, there were only two alterations to the starting seven that took to the court for the Ferns in game two of 2025 compared to 2024.
However, another aggressive 15-minute effort from the Diamonds overwhelmed the Silver Ferns once more.
“This is a really tough time for them and everyone in that environment,” Silver Ferns legend Cathrine Tuivaiti said during Fox Sports coverage.
“They are grappling to find their way through. We’ve got two coaches who have stepped in to fill a void, for lack of a better term.
“It’s unclear whether they are operating under a game plan set prior to their appointment or if they are developing their own … they are certainly racing against time.
“The scoreline illustrates the urgent need for action because they are indicating a degree of discontent behind the scenes, and unhappy players do not perform well.”

‘NO WINNERS’ IN THIS SAD SAGA
Tuivaiti’s sentiments have been echoed by various other luminaries of New Zealand netball, including Maria Folau, who asserted that there will be “no winners” when this episode concludes.
Gail Parata, Silver Ferns national selector, emphasised that the organisation is “in trouble” if internal issues like Taurua’s situation are allowed to escalate to this level.
“It’s tough,” noted Burger, who was appointed captain for the series by interim coach Yvette McCausland-Durie during the Constellation Cup competition, in an interview with Fox Sports following Wednesday’s match.
“There’s a lot of external noise and pressure on us, but we are still determined to give our best, even if the results don’t reflect our aspirations … our hearts remain in it.
“They were always going to come out strongly against us, and we have work ahead of us.”
“We still want to represent the black dress with pride. Hopefully, when we return to New Zealand, the crowd being our eighth player will serve as our turning point.”
Australia is set to travel across the Tasman for the remaining two matches of the series, with the first taking place in Hamilton on Sunday, October 26, followed by the final match in Christchurch on Wednesday, October 29.
