Preston finds themselves just one point above the relegation zone after Nat Phillips scored in the 84th minute, granting Derby County a crucial 1-0 victory over third-bottom Hull City.
Derby had dropped to 22nd following Luton’s triumph over Coventry but bounced back with two consecutive away wins, lifting them to 19th place.
John Eustace’s side must secure a win against Stoke City on the final day to guarantee their Championship status.
If Hull manages to secure a victory against Portsmouth in their final match, it would ensure their survival above whoever loses in Derby’s clash with Stoke.
Meanwhile, George Saville’s first goal in almost 18 months provided play-off-contending Millwall with a crucial 1-0 win over Swansea City at The Den.
The Lions trail Coventry only on goal difference, thanks to their fifth consecutive victory at home.
Next, they will face promoted Burnley on the last day, whilst Coventry hosts Middlesbrough, who played out a 0-0 draw against Norwich City.
