Auxerre midfielder Elisha Owusu has praised the influence of seasoned striker Bafetimbi Gomis in enhancing his goal contributions this season.
So far this season, Owusu has notched up one goal and three assists in 26 appearances in Ligue 1 – a notable improvement from his record of one goal and two assists from 33 games during Auxerre’s promotional journey from Ligue 2 in the 2023/24 season.
The Ghanaian attributes his progress to Gomis, who has encouraged him to rethink his approach to the game.
“He advised me to set my goals and reflect on them each time I step onto the pitch. Since then, my mindset has evolved.
“I’ve realised that I can contribute more to the team, so I’ve made a concerted effort to give my best in every match. It’s rewarding to have been able to assist with some goals and provide support,” he added.
Two seasons ago, Auxerre faced relegation from Ligue 1, finishing in 17th place with only eight wins across 38 matches. Their swift return to the top division has been defined by resilience, as they currently stand 11 points clear of the relegation zone with six matches left to play (38 points, 11th position).
“I believe the team’s mentality is what sets us apart this season,” Owusu commented.
“We’ve developed a stronger bond, and our mentality has greatly improved. The new signings have integrated seamlessly, and the coach has blended the squad effectively.
“Overall, I think our quality as a team is elevated.”
With 26 of Auxerre’s 38 points secured at home this season – ranking as the ninth-best home record in Ligue 1 – these points have been essential for their fight against relegation.
“Our fans energise us. They inspire us to push harder,” Owusu praised the Stade Abbe-Deschamps supporters.
“They stand by us, even in tough times. Their unwavering support instils positivity and confidence, creating an incredible atmosphere for us to play in. Our home crowd has been a major asset for us.”

Owusu’s development goes beyond mere statistics. The 27-year-old has captained the team on three occasions this season, stepping up during the absence of key players.
“It’s a privilege for me to captain and support the team,” he remarked.
“Auxerre is a significant club in France, and leading the team is a tremendous honour. I feel the weight of responsibility to perform at my best and assist my teammates effectively.”
With their safety nearly assured, Auxerre is determined to finish the season strongly. “Our primary objective is to remain in the league, and then we’ll reassess,”
“We just want to secure our place and win as many matches as possible. Competing in Ligue 1 is challenging, but we’ll put in our utmost effort,” the Ghanaian explained.
Owusu, who has represented Ghana 15 times, is keen on solidifying his spot in the Black Stars squad for the 2026 World Cup.
“The World Cup is the pinnacle for any footballer; it’s a dream that begins in childhood,” he stated.
“To play for your nation on such a grand stage, with the world watching, is surreal and fills you with pride. It’s hard to convey that feeling with words.”
“I’m eagerly anticipating the 2026 World Cup. Every Ghanaian player is striving hard for a chance to make the final squad. When you put in the effort, you want to be part of the World Cup team. I train daily and work tirelessly to secure a spot for the tournament next year,” he added.
Auxerre will next face Lens in matchday 31 of Ligue 1, looking to bounce back from two consecutive 3-1 defeats to Lyon and Lille.
