Brisbane coach Chris Fagan has disclosed that he advised former club captain Dayne Zorko to “calm down” during a tense moment caught by television cameras on the boundary line.
Zorko conceded a free kick at a pivotal juncture in Brisbane’s match against Collingwood at the Gabba on Thursday night, where the Magpies secured victory with a score of 16.9 (105) to 7.11 (53).
The premiership-winning Lion protested the lack of a free kick for what he believed was a high tackle.
Umpire Nick Foot intervened by awarding a free kick to Collingwood for what he deemed “abuse”.
Shortly after, Zorko was chased down by Collingwood’s speedster Bobby Hill, leading to a goal from Nick Daicos that increased the visitors’ advantage to 20 points.
Following this, Zorko was substituted off the field, prompting Fagan, who was on the sidelines with his headset on, to confront the veteran player.
Zorko responded with a sceptical expression before making his way off.

“He was a bit worked up at that moment, and I simply said, ‘Mate, you need to calm down, just calm down’, so it wasn’t anything more serious than that,” Fagan shared in his press conference.
“I’m not sure if it appeared to be more than that, but it really wasn’t.
“I won’t claim that’s the reason for our loss.”
AFL legend Leigh Matthews, who led Brisbane to three premierships between 2001 and 2003, found the situation fascinating.
“Those are typically short conversations, especially if they’re a bit confrontational,” Matthews commented during the Fox Footy coverage.
The contest between the Lions and Magpies, a rematch of the 2023 grand final, marked Brisbane’s first defeat of the season.
Collingwood had begun their season with a hefty 52-point loss to GWS but has since bounced back with five consecutive wins against Port Adelaide, the Western Bulldogs, Carlton, Sydney, and Brisbane.
