Bodo/Glimt made history by becoming the first Norwegian side to reach a European semi-final, triumphing over SS Lazio 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout during the UEFA Europa League quarter-final second leg, despite a 3-1 defeat after extra time at the Stadio Olimpico.
From the outset, Bodo demonstrated they were not content to merely defend their two-goal lead. Jens Petter Hauge found Håkon Evjen with a quick pass, prompting a save from Christos Mandas within the opening moments – though it was a comfortable stop for the keeper. Lazio soon began to assert their quality, with Nikita Haikin preventing Pedro’s angled shot from troubling the net. The hosts then made their mark when Gustav Isaksen skillfully cut along the line before setting up Taty Castellanos, who executed a lovely flick to halve the aggregate score in favour of Lazio.
As half-time approached, Lazio pressed hard for an equaliser, with Mattia Zaccagni’s header from Mario Gila’s delicate cross crashing off the crossbar. Bodø had their own opportunity just before the interval when Patrick Berg’s free-kick nearly found the top corner, only for Mandas to tip it over. The second half resumed with Lazio applying more pressure, with Zaccagni coming close again, his sharp shot well parried by Haikin.
Despite this pressure, Bodø understood that one goal could secure their advancement, nearly achieving it shortly after the hour mark. Hauge found himself in a prime position but was thwarted by Mandas, who tipped his shot over the bar. Haikin then sprang into action with a superb series of saves, denying Pedro, Castellanos, and Zaccagni in quick succession. However, he was powerless to stop Tijjani Noslin from scoring a dramatic goal in stoppage time following a scramble in the box, pushing the contest into extra time.
It took 100 minutes for the Eagles to regain control, as Mattéo Guendouzi’s delicate chip set up Boulaye Dia for a close-range header, putting Lazio ahead on aggregate. Yet, the excitement was far from finished, as Bodø levelled in the second half of extra time when Andreas Helmersen headed in, evading Mandas. Ironically, Helmersen was then dismissed for a second yellow card just moments later, missing the chance to take a penalty in the ensuing shootout.
Bodø stepped up first in the penalty shootout, but Hauge’s lacklustre attempt was easily saved by Mandas. Dia converted for Lazio, putting them ahead, followed by Sondre Brunstad Fet mirroring that success. Unfortunately, Loum Tchaouna faced the same fate as Hauge, with his shot saved. Despite the missed opportunities, the visitors scored their next two penalties, while Noslin faltered in between. The stage was then set for Berg, who had the chance to secure victory but dramatically blazed over the bar. In an unexpected turn of events, Castellanos also failed to convert, yet Bodø emerged victorious from the shootout with a 3-2 win, etching their name into history.
