The Newcastle Jets pulled off a remarkable victory over Melbourne City at AAMI Park, securing a narrow 1-0 triumph in a match that faced an hour-long delay due to lightning strikes in the vicinity.
Initially suspended just 14 minutes into the match, play resumed an hour and four minutes later, and the contest ignited with a stunning strike from Jets forward Lachie Rose in the 69th minute. Rose’s powerful effort marked the away team’s only shot on target, gifting them the lead.
Melbourne City had multiple chances to clinch the win but were repeatedly denied by an outstanding Noah James in goal for Newcastle, who recorded a clean sheet with eight crucial saves.
This victory not only brings Newcastle closer to the top six, now just six points adrift, but it also marks the first time in 20 years that they have gone seven matches without a loss.
On the other hand, this defeat halts City’s four-match unbeaten streak and prevents them from seizing the opportunity to move up to second on the ladder.
Having not won in Melbourne against City for a decade, the Jets sought to make a strong start, but before any scoreline could take shape, the lightning postponed proceedings.
Play was halted after just 14 minutes due to lightning strikes within a 10km radius, leading to a suspension at AAMI Park for over an hour before players could finally return to action.

Upon resuming, Melbourne City controlled much of the match, applying relentless pressure. Former Jets midfielder Steven Ugarkovic eluded several challenges before forcing Newcastle’s goalkeeper Noah James into a low save.
In the 37th minute, Kosta Grozos misplayed a pass straight to Ugarkovic, who laid the ball off for Max Caputo. However, the young striker’s powerful low shot was expertly saved.
Just a minute later, James was again called into action, this time facing a fierce effort from Socceroo Mat Leckie inside the box.
After a goalless first half, normal play resumed, and James again denied Caputo with a close-range save.
The Jets nearly capitalised on an error from Kai Trewin at the back but were relieved when goalkeeper Patrick Beach swiftly intervened to clear the ball just in time.
Leckie then squandered a chance in the 61st minute, heading wide after connecting with a driven cross from Samuel Souprayen.
City came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 66th minute, but some exceptional defending kept the scoreline level. Nathaniel Atkinson won a battle for a loose ball inside the box and aimed towards the far corner, only to be thwarted by Phillip Cancar’s chest save on the line.
As if that wasn’t enough drama, just a minute later, City could hardly believe they hadn’t scored. A precise cross from Ugarkovic found Trewin, whose glancing header looked destined for the bottom corner until James managed to tip it onto the post. Substitute Harry Politidis then inexplicably missed an open goal from a yard out.
In true football fashion, City were punished for their missed opportunities.
In a swift counter-attack, the Jets unexpectedly took the lead. Racing down the right flank, Aquilina set up an unmarked Rose in the City box. After evading Trewin’s attempted challenge, Rose unleashed a powerful left-footed shot that soared past Beach and into the net, stunning the crowd at AAMI Park.
Trailing, City launched a desperate search for an equaliser, but time and again they were thwarted by James’ exceptional goalkeeping. In the dying moments, Andreas Kuen unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box that James skillfully tipped around the post in the 93rd minute.
