Sparta Prague’s sporting director, Tomas Rosicky, appears unlikely to change his position in the near future, despite speculation linking him to a similar role at his former club, Arsenal.
Jason Ayto has since taken on the role, and as reported by The Athletic, he is among the candidates being considered for the position.
Also mentioned are former Manchester United sporting director, Dan Ashworth, although Rosicky, who has been at the helm of Sparta Prague’s sporting side since 2018, seems to be an outside contender for the job.
During a recent podcast appearance, he stated: “The truth is, it’s quite simple. My connection with Arsenal is natural as I spent a decade there. Over that time, a strong bond was formed. I cherish both Arsenal and Sparta; they are two clubs I hold dear.”
“It’s an honour for me that my name is in the minds of Arsenal’s management. However, I have not received any offer to join the Arsenal staff.”
The former Czech international enjoyed a ten-year playing career with the Gunners, featuring in 246 matches across all competitions and netting 28 goals.
During his tenure, he played alongside the current manager, Mikel Arteta, and the two have maintained intermittent communication, reminiscing about what Rosicky describes as a “remarkable period” spent together as teammates.
Rosicky remarked: “Mikel and I were teammates for nearly five years. While I wouldn’t say we are particularly close friends or that we keep constant contact, we certainly enjoyed our time as teammates. Whenever we cross paths, there’s a genuine sense of happiness. It has been a long time since I last visited Arsenal, but during my last trip, we spent considerable time catching up. That said, we don’t regularly call each other.“
There has been a noticeable rise in midfielders transitioning into successful managerial roles, highlighted by the likes of Arteta at Arsenal and Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen in recent years.
Rosicky feels these players possess an edge when moving from the pitch to the dugout.
The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder commented: “There’s certainly a strong link here. Players like Arteta, Xavi, Xabi Alonso, and Guardiola—especially those four—played in pivotal midfield positions, allowing them to observe everything happening around them, both ahead and behind…
“The experiences they’ve had, the angles from which they viewed the game, and their understanding of how to play between the lines, how to position their bodies, and which foot to use for passes—these are the nuances they’ll demand from their players.
“Having experienced these scenarios on the pitch plays a significant role in their success as coaches. They have the advantage of having lived through particular situations firsthand and can effectively communicate that to their players.”
Under Rosicky’s guidance, Sparta Prague clinched the Czech league title for the first time in nine years in 2023, successfully following it up with another league victory the following year.
However, this season, they find themselves trailing behind rivals Slavia Prague and currently occupy third place in the league standings.
