Aston Villa manager Unai Emery had high praise for the recently signed Marcus Rashford (27), the former Manchester United forward who has quickly become a standout performer since joining his new club.
Rashford, who arrived at Villa on loan from United earlier this month, came off the bench at halftime during Saturday’s 2-1 triumph over Chelsea, playing a crucial role by providing assists for both goals from his fellow newcomer Marco Asensio.
Just two months after Rashford’s decline in form saw him fall out of favour with United’s manager Ruben Amorim, and following a period of intense scrutiny regarding his commitment and work rate, Saturday’s match showcased the 27-year-old’s return to form.
“We want to support him. Help him. We need to make him feel at ease here, build his confidence, and integrate his skills into our tactical framework while being demanding with him. He is in this process,” Emery told Sky Sports regarding his strategy for working with Rashford.
“Naturally, he delivered an outstanding 45 minutes. Our goal now is to maintain that level of performance.
“It’s important that he becomes a key player for us, like he was today, but we want to see that consistently. Above all, we need him to feel comfortable and confident in a positive environment; this is my aim.”
Since joining Villa, Rashford has shown a strong desire to impress, with teammates and supporters welcoming him with open arms.
His pace made him a constant threat down the left flank during the second half at Villa Park, with fans roaring in support of him.
“I’m really pleased we signed Rashford, especially given his current form and those two assists today,” said Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans.
“Marcus is a player who can pose a threat to any defence. He’s essential for us with his unique style of play on the left wing.
“You could see that every time he got the ball he looked dangerous, and with more game time, he’ll only continue to improve.”
Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp, initially sceptical about Rashford’s switch to Villa, has now joined the chorus praising the forward’s display.
“He was exceptional,” Redknapp commented during the Sky broadcast. “The Holte End (the south stand at Villa Park) has found a new hero.
“Rashford came on and brought energy, enthusiasm, and everything we want to see. His movement, his determination… he was outstanding. He provided the spark that put Chelsea under pressure.
“That’s how you handle the transfer market. It’s a masterclass.”
