Serie A outfit AS Roma and Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt have faced penalties due to the misconduct of their fans during a Europa League encounter last month, European football’s governing body, UEFA, announced on Friday.
Roma advanced to the tournament’s playoffs with a convincing 2-0 victory at home against Frankfurt, although the German team still managed to secure a top-eight finish despite the defeat.
There were disturbances in the stands at half-time, where fireworks were ignited and fans clashed. Fortunately, stewards and police intervened swiftly, enabling the match to resume without any significant delays.
Frankfurt has been fined €20,000 for the lighting and tossing of fireworks and for crowd-related disruptions, alongside an additional €5,000 for vandalism inflicted on the stadium.
Roma, on the other hand, has incurred a fine of €30,000, and UEFA has mandated the partial closure of their stadium for their next home match in a UEFA club competition.
Additionally, Dutch club FC Twente was penalised with a €35,000 fine and a partial closure of their stadium due to crowd disturbances during their 1-0 win over Turkey’s Besiktas.
