The powerful Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has officially announced his retirement from one-day international cricket, effective immediately, with just over a week remaining before the Champions Trophy.
Stoinis was recently selected for Australia’s squad for the 50-over tournament set to take place in Pakistan and the UAE from February 19 to March 9, but he made the decision to retire from ODIs on Thursday.
The 35-year-old will remain available for T20 internationals.
Over the course of 71 ODIs, he leaves the format with a total of 1495 runs at an average of 26.69, with a highest score of 146 not out.
In addition, he claimed 48 wickets at an average of 43.12, with his best bowling figures standing at 3 for 16.
Stoinis was honoured as the male ODI player of the year at the 2019 Australian Cricket Awards and was part of the Australian team that clinched the 50-over World Cup in India, although he did not play in the final match.
He is widely recognised for his explosive batting style and relaxed personality.

“Representing Australia in ODI cricket has been an amazing journey, and I am thankful for every moment wearing the green and gold,” Stoinis expressed in a statement released by Cricket Australia.
“To stand up for my country at this level is something I will always hold dear.
“This was not an easy choice, but I feel it’s the right moment for me to depart from ODIs and concentrate completely on the next phase of my career.”
Stoinis acknowledged his “fantastic relationship” with Australian head coach Andrew McDonald, expressing his deep appreciation for the support he received.
“I’ll be cheering on the boys during the competition in Pakistan [and the UAE],” Stoinis added.
