With four spots left for European teams in the 2026 World Cup, here’s everything you need to know about the European Play-Offs.
The competition for World Cup qualifications among European nations is a familiar scene, but with the size of football’s premier tournament expanding in 2026, the play-offs have also grown in significance.
So, when do they take place, what is the format, and which teams are involved? We’ve got all the details for you right here.
Understanding the European Play-Offs
A total of 16 nations will compete in the European Play-Offs, featuring the 12 runners-up from the qualifying groups along with the four highest-ranked teams from the latest Nations League who did not secure a top-two finish in their respective groups.
The teams are divided into four pots: the first three based on the FIFA World Rankings and the fourth comprising those entering through the Nations League. One nation from each pot is placed into one of the four play-off paths.
Within each path, the team drawn from Pot 1 will face off against the team from Pot 4, while the Pot 2 team will take on the Pot 3 team in single-legged semi-finals. The winners of these matches will advance to the finals.
The semifinals will be hosted by the nations from Pot 1 and Pot 2, while the host for the finals will be determined by a draw.
