The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has responded to the uproar surrounding Jannik Sinner’s three-month suspension, stating that the situation “is a million miles away from doping.”
The anti-doping body appealed the initial verdict handed down by the International Tennis Integrity Agency and was aiming for a ban of one to two years.
Ultimately, an agreement was reached for a three-month suspension following Sinner’s positive test for clostebol, a prohibited substance, in March 2024.
Sinner has continually maintained his innocence, asserting that the positive result stemmed from a contaminated treatment administered by his physiotherapist, who used an over-the-counter spray to treat a cut.

Several tennis players, including Stan Wawrinka, Novak Djokovic, and Nick Kyrgios, have voiced their concerns regarding the three-month suspension.
Nevertheless, WADA’s general counsel, Ross Wenzel, defended the decision.
“This case was a million miles away from doping,” he stated in an interview with BBC Sport.
“The scientific evidence we received indicated that this could not be considered a case of intentional doping, including micro-dosing.”
Wenzel noted that there had been a varied response to their ruling.
“WADA has received feedback from those who believe the penalty was excessive, while others feel it was insufficient. This divergence in opinions perhaps suggests that while it won’t please everyone, it might indicate that the ruling was appropriately balanced,” he remarked.
“In our review of such cases, we focus on the technical aspects and the operational details, without concern for public or political opinion,” he added.
