Jamie Vardy has expressed his apologies to Leicester City supporters for what he has described as a “total embarrassment” of a season following the Foxes’ relegation from the Premier League.
Leicester’s inevitable descent to the Championship was confirmed on Sunday after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool, marking their 23rd loss in the league this season.
This defeat at the King Power Stadium also set a new English record, being their ninth consecutive home match without scoring.
Vardy, who famously led Leicester to their stunning Premier League title win in 2016, has been the team’s top scorer in the league this season with just seven goals, yet hasn’t found the back of the net in his last ten appearances.
In a candid evaluation of the season, Vardy referred to it as a “s**t show” and acknowledged that the team “failed” to perform as a unit.
“At this moment, I’m at a loss for words,” Vardy stated in a message shared on social media.
“No words can truly convey the anger and disappointment I feel regarding how this season has unfolded. There are no justifications.
“As a collective, we, as players and as a club, have failed. There’s no escaping this fact, and I won’t entertain any thoughts of doing so.
“Having spent so many years at this club, we’ve celebrated countless highs and successes, but this season has been nothing short of miserable, and for me personally, it’s been a complete embarrassment. It pains me, and I know you’re feeling it as well.
“To the fans: I’m truly sorry. I regret that we haven’t performed to expectations, and I’m sorry we close the 2025 season on such a dismal note.”
Vardy, now 38, is in his 13th season with Leicester, which may be his last as his contract is set to expire this summer.
The striker isn’t the only one facing an uncertain future at Leicester, with manager Ruud van Nistelrooy also likely to come under scrutiny.
Since taking over in November, Van Nistelrooy has garnered just four points from his last 18 games, having secured four in his initial two matches.
Leicester have five matches remaining this season, beginning with a clash against the Premier League’s in-form side, Wolves, on Saturday.
