Chelsea have performed a startling about-face regarding Liam Rosenior’s future as they look to rescue their season.
This week, we reported that Chelsea had extended their support to Rosenior; however, insiders expressed doubts about his ability to remain in post should the team’s decline continue, and those concerns have now materialised.
A humiliating 3-0 loss to Brighton on Tuesday marked one of Chelsea’s poorest showings this season, pushing them to five consecutive defeats, during which they have not managed to find the back of the net.
The club has opted to relieve Rosenior of his duties ahead of the FA Cup semi-final clash with Leeds United, fearing there could be no immediate end to the downturn.
Chelsea’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League have diminished significantly due to their current league standing, and, according to sources, Rosenior has struggled to earn the respect and authority of the squad.
The situation surrounding Enzo Fernandez has also contributed to tensions, as the standout midfielder was subjected to an internal suspension.
Choosing to appoint Rosenior was always a risky move. With no prior experience in Premier League management, he was brought in from Strasbourg, Chelsea’s sister club in France, and awarded a six-year contract.
Remarkably, he has not lasted even half a year.
Enzo Maresca was dismissed from Chelsea following a breakdown in relations with senior figures, paving the way for Rosenior’s appointment in January.
The team’s decline has been concerning, with their only notable victories recently occurring in the FA Cup against teams from lower divisions.
In the wake of Tuesday’s defeat at Brighton, speculation began to circulate that Rosenior’s job was in jeopardy ahead of the weekend’s fixture at Wembley against Leeds.
Chelsea has had to act swiftly in selecting a replacement for Rosenior, and this urgency may explain why no announcement was made immediately following the defeat.
Last time Chelsea changed managers, Calum McFarlane took the interim reins, and the club is likely to place their trust in him once again while a permanent appointment is considered.
The club had been hesitant to make a change at this stage, genuinely believing in Rosenior’s potential to turn things around.
Consequently, they have not actively pursued any candidates for a full-time role at this time, although Como manager Cesc Fabregas is believed to be among those under consideration.
