CHRISTCHURCH: The Super Round in Christchurch has proven to be an undeniable triumph.
The eagerly awaited launch of One New Zealand Stadium provided a much-needed boost for Super Rugby, and, as the youth say, the atmosphere has been fabulous in the Garden City.
With the sun shining, drinks pouring, and rugby enthusiasts arriving from across the Pacific, fans have unearthed their vintage jerseys, engaged in playful trans-Tasman exchanges, and celebrated all that is special about this intricate, bewildering but ultimately fantastic sport.
Yet, the outcomes on the field have not been quite so rosy from an Australian viewpoint.
The Queensland Reds fought valiantly but fell short, suffering an agonising 36-33 ‘super point’ defeat to the Blues, marking a dismal 0-3 weekend for Australia.
Zac Lomax’s Western Force—unlucky to be the 11th team—had a weekend off, missing the buzz after their upset victory against the Crusaders.
Simple mistakes plagued the Australian teams across all three matches.
While the ACT Brumbies and Reds are still likely to reach the playoffs, they will likely have to contest their final games on New Zealand soil.
“I believe the standings are quite reflective,” remarked Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham when asked about the familiar divide between the two sides of the Tasman.
“However, we have certainly seen a marked improvement in the quality of performances from Australian teams this year. I think we’ve stepped up compared to last season in terms of our displays.”
The last Australian side to lift the trophy was Michael Cheika’s NSW Waratahs back in 2014.
The Reds put in a strong effort, with Louis Werchon’s late converted try pushing the game into extra time.

However, the Blues maintained their composure while controlling the ball in opposing territory, leading to Fraser McReight conceding the crucial penalty after referee James Doleman ruled him offside while pursuing a breakdown penalty.
McReight put up a strong argument, but to no avail, as Beauden Barrett once more broke Australian hearts with a game-winning penalty taken from right in front.
Wallabies captain Harry Wilson, who delivered an outstanding performance, cast his headgear aside in frustration.
