The captain of the Sharks, Cameron McInnes, has dismissed suggestions that star halfback Nicho Hynes is under “extra pressure” to perform in their highly anticipated round one matchup in Las Vegas.
In the season opener, Hynes is set to face off against the league’s premier player, Nathan Cleary, as both Penrith and Cronulla, two strong contenders for the premiership, clash in Sin City.
As the buildup intensifies, both teams departed from Sydney on Thursday, gearing up for the showdown on March 2 (AEDT), which will be the highlight of a four-match event.
Speaking to reporters at the airport, McInnes addressed how his teammate, who has faced criticism, is managing the challenge of competing in front of an expected crowd of 40,000 at Allegiant Stadium.
His comments reflected Cronulla’s unwavering confidence in their key playmaker.

“He’s got the same pressure as everyone else in the team, but ultimately, it’s the pressure he places on himself that’s significant,” McInnes explained.
“He’ll be fine; he’s a mature individual who has overcome challenges that others haven’t faced.
“Such experiences have only strengthened him.”
After a challenging 2024 season, Hynes appears to have emerged stronger, as the Sharks endeavour to take on powerhouses like the Panthers and Storm in the title race.
McInnes believes that the Vegas game is an ideal opportunity to establish momentum, despite all the external distractions associated with the event.
“Last year’s encounter with the Roosters and Manly was a blast for them because they came away with a win,” he noted.
“Winning is what matters most; that’s the aim.”
Penrith hooker Mitch Kenny exhibited a bit more enthusiasm when asked about the upcoming overseas fixture, which marks the NRL’s second foray into the US.

“I woke up feeling like a kid on Christmas morning,” he remarked.
“The team is buzzing; it’s a long flight, but we’re eagerly anticipating the adventure.”
In addition to the Sharks vs Panthers match in Vegas, the Raiders will also face the Warriors, and there’s a Super League clash featuring the Warrington Wolves taking on the Wigan Warriors.
Furthermore, Australia’s women’s team, the Jillaroos, will compete against England.
