Aliou Cisse has resigned from his position as head coach of the Libyan national team, marking a premature conclusion to his tenure, with sources indicating that financial difficulties influenced his decision.
The 50-year-old, who took the reins in March 2025 under a two-year contract that included the option for an additional year, announced his departure via social media on Wednesday.
“Last March was a remarkable moment for me, as it marked my final camp as head coach of the Libya national team. This has been a profoundly rewarding journey, both professionally and personally, and I couldn’t leave without expressing my heartfelt sentiments,” Cisse shared on Instagram.
“To the technical staff and the players: despite the challenges we encountered, I take pride in what we’ve achieved together and the results we’ve delivered. I have unwavering faith in this team and am confident you will persist in advancing it further.”
“To the Libyan supporters: I extend my sincere gratitude for the warm welcome and your unwavering support. You will always hold a special place in my heart, and I know the Knights of the Mediterranean can always rely on your backing. Wishing you all the best for the future.”
During his time in charge, the former Senegalese international presided over 10 matches, securing three wins, five draws, and two losses, with his final encounters against Niger Republic and Liberia ending in draws.
Although Cisse aimed to instill organisation within the North African side, results proved to be inconsistent, as they often failed to secure victories despite some commendable performances.
Notwithstanding these challenges, the man who guided Senegal to victory in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations remained grateful for the opportunity to coach the Mediterranean Knights.
With Cisse’s sudden departure, the Libyan Football Federation will now commence its search for a new head coach.
