Australia’s captain, Sam Kerr, expressed that their loss to Japan in the Asian Cup final last month was a tough pill to swallow, but she believes this experience will benefit the Matildas in next year’s Women’s World Cup.
Japan clinched the title with a narrow 1-0 victory over the hosts, marking their third triumph in the last four editions of the tournament, thanks to Maika Hamano’s crucial goal.
Australia secured their place in the World Cup in Brazil following their quarter-final win against North Korea, and Kerr highlighted the many positives from their Asian Cup journey.
“We managed to qualify for the World Cup, which is definitely a plus, and Japan are a brilliant team,” said Kerr while in Kenya for the FIFA Series friendlies.
“I haven’t completely processed it yet; it was honestly disappointing and feels like a significant opportunity missed. However, given our achievements and the support from our nation, I think it was a positive tournament overall.
“It’s crucial because we will encounter a variety of teams in the World Cup,” the Chelsea striker continued.
“The World Cup is expanding with every edition, and we’ll face teams from all corners of the world, so it’s vital for us to prepare for every type of match.“
This Saturday, Australia will take on Malawi, followed by a match against either Kenya or India.
