Roma defender Mats Hummels, a key figure in Germany’s triumph at the 2014 World Cup, has announced his retirement at the end of the current season through a heartfelt message on social media this Friday.
In an emotional video shared on Instagram, the 36-year-old spoke of “a moment no footballer can escape”, stating, “after more than 18 years of everything that football has offered me, I will be concluding my career this summer”.
Hummels began his journey in the youth ranks of Bayern Munich, making his first-team debut at just 18 years old. He later moved to Borussia Dortmund, where he became an integral part of Jürgen Klopp’s squad, helping the team secure two league titles.
Teaming up with fellow centre-back Jérôme Boateng, Hummels played the entirety of the 2014 World Cup final, where Germany defeated Argentina 1-0 at the iconic Maracanã stadium in Brazil, clinching the title for the fourth time.
He subsequently returned to Bayern Munich, where he picked up three additional league championships. His move back to Bayern, met with criticism from some Dortmund supporters, was aimed at securing a Champions League title; however, Hummels was unable to achieve that illustrious goal during his time there.
In 2019, Hummels made his return to Dortmund, just a year prior to Bayern’s victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, which saw them lifting their sixth title.
The defender made two appearances in the prestigious Champions League final, in 2013 and 2024, but unfortunately, found himself on the losing side both times with Dortmund at Wembley Stadium.
Representing Germany 78 times, Hummels has played a total of 508 matches for Dortmund and an additional 118 for Bayern. He then signed with Serie A club Roma in 2024 and will retire after just one season with the team.
Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann praised Hummels, calling him “a benchmark at the international level and a role model for a generation of defenders”.
