Toni Kroos appears to be on the cusp of rejoining Real Madrid. A report from the Spanish publication AS indicates that the 2014 World Cup champion is expected to take on a significant role within the sporting framework of the Spanish giants from this summer. However, it remains uncertain what specific responsibilities the 36-year-old will take on.
Kroos concluded his playing career in 2024 after a decade with Los Blancos. Throughout his tenure at Real Madrid, he celebrated five Champions League victories and secured the league title on four occasions.
Despite these achievements, the last two years have seen the club struggle to live up to its lofty ambitions. This season has been particularly challenging, with the early dismissal of coach Xabi Alonso and the possibility of finishing the season without silverware.
Madrid has already exited the cup competition, and with just seven league matches remaining, they find themselves nine points adrift of reigning champions FC Barcelona.
In the Champions League quarter-finals, Real lost the first leg against Bayern Munich 2-1 and will journey to Germany for the return match on Wednesday.
Real face a critical clash in Munich
“Munich or the abyss,” read the headline in AS following a disappointing performance against FC Girona (1-1) on Friday night.
“We must concentrate on Wednesday, as we need to give it everything,” said coach Alvaro Arbeloa, keen to swiftly move on from the recent disappointment.
“Wednesday is our match. That’s crystal clear. We need to direct all our energy towards it and travel to Germany with total confidence.”
While Toni Kroos may not feature just yet, he could potentially return as soon as this summer.
