Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Mathys Tel (19) is “100 per cent” committed to Tottenham after the French forward completed a loan move to the club, despite having reportedly turned down a switch earlier in the January transfer window.
In a flurry of activity on the final hours of Monday’s transfer deadline day, Tottenham set about reinforcing Postecoglou’s injury-stricken squad, securing the signings of Tel and defender Kevin Danso.
The Bayern Munich talent was also linked with potential moves to Manchester United and Arsenal before opting for Tottenham, who hold an option to make the transfer permanent in the summer.
Postecoglou, whose team heads into Thursday’s League Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool with a 1-0 advantage, addressed the media prior to the match and stated that Tel made the right choice to carefully consider such an important decision.
“It’s not that he rejected us or anyone else,” the Spurs manager clarified. “He was completely justified in seeking as much information as possible.”
The Australian further remarked: “I spoke with him, focusing purely on football, and I believe he will discover a fantastic environment here for his career development.”
“He clearly wants to play. We’ve demonstrated that regardless of age, he’ll get the chance here, and our style of play will be beneficial for him.”
“Considering the challenges we face in the coming months, and our aspirations for the future, I felt he would be an ideal addition.”
When asked whether he believed the French under-21 international was entirely committed to the Spurs cause, Postecoglou replied: “Yes, 100 per cent. I’m more than 100 per cent confident because he took great care and was thorough in gathering information before taking the decision to join us.”
“He had other options, which reassures me that we’re attracting the right mentality and calibre of player.”
“He is genuinely ambitious, possesses a strong sense of self-belief and confidence, and he aspires to reach the pinnacle of the sport. His decision to join us speaks volumes about the great work we’re undertaking.”
Both Tel and Danso will be available for Thursday’s match at Anfield, while Micky van de Ven and fellow centre-back Cristian Romero are set to miss out, as Postecoglou opts for a “conservative” approach given the duo’s recent injuries.
Tottenham stands just one match away from the League Cup final at Wembley, looking to end a trophy drought that has lasted since 2008.
In his second season with Tottenham, former Celtic manager Postecoglou has placed pressure on himself, claiming he “always wins things in my second year.”
However, he noted that both Premier League leaders and current League Cup holders Liverpool will also be feeling the heat.
“I don’t believe Liverpool will be any less apprehensive than us about this fixture,” he asserted. “Being in a semi-final, particularly in a tight second leg, brings its own pressures.”
“It’s a significant match for both clubs, and while you recognise and embrace that, if you want to be successful, these are precisely the types of fixtures you wish to be part of.”
