As always, the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals delivered plenty of excitement through the four return leg clashes. Eight teams have now been whittled down to four, bringing us closer to discovering who will make it to Munich for the final. Here’s a noteworthy statistic for each side involved following the quarter-final second legs.
7 – Borussia Dortmund’s 2024/25 UEFA Champions League adventure may have ended in elimination, but they can take pride in their victory. A hat-trick from Serhou Guirassy sparked hopes for the Bundesliga club, although they ultimately fell short. Currently, they sit six points adrift from a Champions League spot domestically, and time is running out.
On a brighter note, they can celebrate their first-ever European win against Barcelona, finally breaking the deadlock on their seventh attempt.
24 – Barcelona have proven themselves nearly unbeatable in 2025. With an impressive goal tally, it’s no wonder they have made their way back to the UCL semi-finals for the first time in six years. The dream of achieving a third domestic treble remains alive for the Catalans.
However, their defeat in Germany snapped a remarkable 24-match unbeaten streak, with Dortmund becoming the first team to secure a win against them this year.
3 – Aston Villa’s inaugural Champions League campaign may have drawn to a close, but they have much to be proud of. The 1981/82 European Cup champions kept five clean sheets and clinched eight victories, including a win on Tuesday. Sadly for them, the quarter-finals proved to be their stumbling block once again, just as it did in 1983.
At least Villa exit with a win, marking their third victory against Ligue 1 opposition, all achieved on home soil.
5 – Paris Saint-Germain triumphed 5-4 on aggregate in a thrilling contest at Villa Park. The Les Parisiens showcased their talent when it counted, advancing further in the competition.
Now, they find themselves in their fifth semi-final of Europe’s top club competition and their fourth in the UCL era. Interestingly, PSG has reached this stage in four of the last six seasons, but they have progressed beyond only once.
15 – Inter Milan continues to display just how challenging they are to overcome. A 4-3 aggregate victory sees the Nerazzurri into their second semi-final in three seasons.
As the last Italian team to lift the UCL trophy, Inter is currently on a 15-match unbeaten run at home in this competition. Ironically, Bayern was the last team to secure a win at San Siro, doing so back in the 2022/23 group stage.
10 – Despite facing several injury challenges, Bayern Munich put up a strong fight against Inter. However, the Bavarians couldn’t overturn their first-leg deficit and bowed out at this stage for the fourth time in the past five years.
This marks the tenth occasion Bayern have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage during the Champions League era—an unwanted record as no team has suffered more in that round of the tournament.
6 – For Real Madrid, the 2024/25 UCL season will likely be remembered as a significant disappointment. For the first time in five years, they have lost both legs of a knockout tie, a feat they last experienced against an English side (Manchester City).
Perhaps more concerning is that Wednesday’s defeat was their sixth in the UCL this season, marking their worst performance in terms of losses in a single European campaign.
2 – Arsenal has finally returned to the UCL semi-finals after a lengthy 16-year absence. The Gunners remain unbeaten in four encounters against Real Madrid.
They also join an elite group, becoming the eighth different club to eliminate Real Madrid on two separate occasions in the European Cup/Champions League, with Bayern Munich (five) and Juventus (four) being the only teams to do so more frequently.
