The NFL’s commissioner, Roger Goodell, has confirmed that players from the league are expected to partake in flag football at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Flag football, which is a non-contact variant of American football, is one of five new sports added to the Olympic programme for LA ’28.
Following this announcement, speculation arose regarding the participation of NFL players, although logistical challenges brought some uncertainty to the discussion.
One such challenge is the timing of the Olympics, which coincides with the NFL training camp period.
A major concern remains whether team owners will allow their high-profile players to participate in Olympic competition in pursuit of gold.
Goodell stated, “This is an ongoing discussion not only with the union but also with the franchises. I anticipate we will come to a resolution on these matters within the next 60 days.”

He further noted, “Many players have expressed their desire to represent their nations, whether it be for the United States or their country of origin.”
The NFL is reportedly considering implementing protective measures for teams and players while attempting to align their schedules with the Olympic timeline, given its potential overlap with NFL training camps.
The Olympic Games are set to occur from July 14-30 in 2028.

Numerous players born in the US also qualify to compete for other nations due to their heritage and have already shown enthusiasm for participation.
Micah Parsons, a standout player for the Dallas Cowboys, has stated his intention to “step away from football to get ready for the Olympics” in 2027.
Both Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow have also expressed interest in taking part.
This enthusiasm isn’t limited to US athletes alone, as Australians are also eager to make their mark at the 2028 Games in LA.
In a discussion with the BBC in 2024, Wade Kelly, chief executive of American Football Australia, mentioned that over 100 professionals from various ball-carrying sports have inquired about competing in LA.
“A lot of them are fans of the NFL and have realised the possibility of playing against athletes like Patrick Mahomes or Tyreek Hill,” Kelly remarked.
