The Melbourne Victory has triumphed over Perth Glory with a narrow 1-0 victory, propelling them up to fifth place in the NINJA A-League standings as the playoff race heats up.
Claudia Bunge netted the sole goal in the 22nd minute, connecting with a corner to head the ball into the net. Amid heated exchanges at the Sam Kerr Football Centre, the Victory managed to secure a crucial three points.
This win elevates Melbourne Victory to fifth place, and they will monitor the outcomes of the Central Coast and Brisbane Roar matches to determine if they can maintain their playoff position. Perth Glory required a victory by at least nine goals to have any hope of entering the top six, leaving them in eighth place.
Perth Glory nearly got on the scoreboard early when Ella Abdul Massih flicked the ball towards the goal from the back post, where Gabby Hollar was poised to finish. However, their excitement was short-lived as the linesman raised his flag, disallowing the goal.
The Victory compounded Perth’s frustration just ten minutes later when Bunge headed in from another corner, putting them in the lead.
Melbourne Victory had a chance to extend their advantage when Holly Furphy found space on the left and delivered a perfect ball to Sofia Sakalis, who unfortunately lost her footing in the penalty area, allowing Glory’s Teresa Morrissey an easy save.
As tempers flared both on the field and in the technical areas, the Victory held on to their lead, giving them a solid shot at reaching the playoffs as the regular season draws to a close.
