Real Madrid cruised past Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds for the third time in four seasons, with Kylian Mbappe (26) showcasing his talent by netting a brilliant hat-trick in a 3-1 victory on the night, sealing a dominant 6-3 aggregate win to secure their place in the last 16.
The Bernabeu supporters displayed prudence by refraining from displaying any tifos that might tempt fate as they took confidence in their remarkable history, having progressed from 37 of their last 39 UCL encounters after winning the first leg away.
Just four minutes into the match, their strong position was further cemented when Raul Asencio delivered a long ball. Ruben Dias misjudged the pass, allowing Mbappe to nonchalantly chip it over the stranded Ederson.

Mbappe’s swift strike within the first 12 minutes provided the hosts with a cushion, but the 15-time Champions League winners remained determined to add to their tally.
Continuing their quest for dominance, Madrid generated several corner opportunities – one of which saw Jude Bellingham narrowly miss the target with a header – but the most enthralling moments were yet to come.
At the 33-minute mark, Vinicius Junior’s incisive ball was deftly flicked on by Rodrygo to Mbappe, who effortlessly spun away from Josko Gvardiol before slotting the ball past Ederson at his near post.
Manchester City’s struggles were compounded by the absence of Erling Haaland, which rendered their attacking efforts futile in the first half, a situation that lingered into the second half with little offensive threat.
The hosts showcased complete control, and Mbappe capped off his hat-trick in sublime fashion, cutting inside of Phil Foden to convert with a left-footed shot from outside the box.
While City did show slight improvement in their attacking play later on, Carlo Ancelotti’s men looked far more likely to add to their scoreline, with Vinícius forcing Ederson into a save with a curling shot.
Four goals down on aggregate, City appeared disheartened as the match drew to a close, though they finally netted a consolation goal during stoppage time; Omar Marmoush’s free-kick hit the crossbar and fell kindly for Nico Gonzalez to tap in.
The draw between the last two champions of this prestigious competition at this stage was certainly an unexpected sight, but Real Madrid emerged victorious for the second consecutive season.
Having lifted the trophy in the previous campaign, their path to repeating that feat won’t be any easier, as they await a clash with either city rivals Atlético Madrid or Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen in the next round.
