The Central Coast Mariners faced a 2-0 defeat against Japanese outfit Kawasaki Frontale in their concluding match of the ACL Elite campaign, a notable occasion that saw 16-year-old midfielder Haine Eames take charge as captain.
The Mariners performed admirably in the first half; however, they found themselves trailing ten minutes before the break when Brazilian striker Erison converted a penalty after Christian Theoharous had fouled Hinata Yamauchi in the area.
In the second half, Frontale controlled the play and created numerous chances to extend their lead. They finally succeeded with practically the last kick of the match, when substitute Marcinho deftly lobbed goalkeeper Adam Pavlesic in the eighth minute of stoppage time, sealing the game at 2-0.
This defeat leaves the Mariners at the bottom of the ACL Elite league phase, having managed only one point from their eight matches.
On a brighter note, young midfielder Eames took on the captaincy in the second half, leading the Mariners for the final 20 minutes against one of Asia’s elite teams.

On a chilly evening in Kawasaki, Mark Jackson opted for a youthful Mariners lineup with an average age of just 21.7 years. Although they struggled for possession in the first half, they showcased commendable defensive organisation against a team aiming to top the ACL Elite league.
Aside from an audacious bicycle kick from Erison, goalkeeper Adam Pavlesic had a relatively quiet half as Frontale controlled possession but found it difficult to carve out significant opportunities.
This changed in the 35th minute when Theoharous fouled Yamauchi in the box, leading to a penalty awarded after VAR review. Erison confidently converted the penalty, putting Frontale ahead 1-0.
Shortly before the break, Yamauchi nearly doubled the advantage with a stunning shot from the edge of the box that hit the crossbar and post before being cleared by the Mariners, who went into the break trailing by a goal.
With Brian Kaltak suspended and Trent Sainsbury sidelined due to injury, Jackson further reduced the team’s average age in the second half by introducing Arthur De Lima and Bailey Brandtman, providing more young players with invaluable experience in Japan.

Even more encouragingly, 16-year-old Eames was entrusted with the captaincy for the remainder of the match, taking over from Harrison Steele, reflecting the head coach’s confidence in the young midfielder.

Frontale’s substitute Marcinho made an immediate impact, forcing Pavlesic into a sharp save in the 73rd minute as the Mariners began to tire, allowing the home side to take full control, albeit still leading by just one goal.
Marcinho then fired a powerful left-footed shot wide of the post as the home side pushed for a second goal to secure the win and bolster their chances of finishing atop the league standings.
Ultimately, Marcinho did find the net, scoring deep into stoppage time. Sprinting onto a ball played over the top, he skillfully lifted it over the advancing Pavlesic to finalise the scoreline at 2-0.
