Approximately 150 supporters from Manchester City and Chelsea, known for their past violent behaviour, will be restricted from travelling during the FIFA Club World Cup set to take place in the United States this summer, as announced by Britain’s Home Office on Wednesday.
In order to minimise the risk of football-related disorder throughout the tournament, fans from these clubs who are already under a football banning order for previous misconduct will be required to hand over their passports to the authorities between June 9 and July 13.
“A large number of Manchester City and Chelsea supporters will undoubtedly wish to travel and cheer on their teams in this summer’s event, and we aim for them to do so in a safe and enjoyable manner,” stated Policing Minister Diana Johnson.
“However, for the small number of troublemakers who exploit football as a pretext for criminality, we will implement the same successful preventative measures that have worked well during past international tournaments.”
The fans affected will be informed by the Football Banning Orders Authority, with the announcement highlighting that failure to adhere to this requirement could lead to an unlimited fine or a potential six-month prison sentence.
As per data from last year, there were 2,172 football banning orders currently enforced in England and Wales.
