Mamelodi Sundowns secured a commendable 1-0 away win against Tunisian powerhouse Esperance in the first leg of their CAF Champions League semi-final on Sunday. However, coach Miguel Cardoso is urging his players to push for even better performance as they aim to seal their progression.
The second leg will take place in Pretoria on Saturday, with Sundowns looking to reach their second consecutive final in the tournament after falling short against Pyramids FC in the last edition.
A solitary goal from Brayan Leon made the difference in the first leg, despite Esperance having several opportunities, and Sundowns had to cope with the loss of seasoned defender Grant Kekana, who was sent off.
“The match unfolded as I anticipated,” commented Cardoso, a former manager of Esperance. “We didn’t achieve the level of possession we aimed for, and there were moments where we struggled to establish our rhythm.”
“We needed to adjust our tactical approach, especially after losing Grant, which undeniably made the game more challenging. Our aim was to solidify our defence in the final stages and maintain our lead.”
Cardoso is determined to make it to a third successive Champions League final, having faced defeat in the last two with Esperance (against Al Ahly) and with Sundowns. He has cautioned his squad that the Tunisians will return with a fierce intent this weekend.
“If you don’t approach the match with a winning mentality, you could find yourself in trouble, and that’s the only way this team knows how to perform,” he remarked. “The squad recognised the various phases of the game.”
“This is the semi-final of the Champions League; it’s not about putting on a show, it’s about delivering results and showcasing solid performances, which is what both sides are aiming for.
“That will certainly be the scenario in Pretoria. The team that manages the situation better will, without a doubt, be the one to take the next step.”
