Paris Saint-Germain made a strong statement in their UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarter-final, overcoming Liverpool with a solid 2-0 victory. This result extended PSG’s unbeaten streak in knockout matches in this tournament to eight games (seven wins and one draw), marking a new record for French clubs.
Having triumphed in their last four two-legged ties against English teams—most notably an astounding 8-2 aggregate victory over Chelsea in the previous round—PSG were in a commanding position. This left Arne Slot’s team understandably wary upon arriving in the French capital.
Early fears for Liverpool were realised when Desire Doue opened the scoring just 11 minutes into the match.
Ousmane Dembele skillfully sliced through the Liverpool defence and set up his fellow Frenchman, whose shot took a significant deflection and sailed over Giorgi Mamardashvili.
While many expected PSG to surge forward, Liverpool managed to hold a sturdy defensive line for the most part.
That said, Mamardashvili had to spring into action, making crucial saves to deny both Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Doue and ensure his team went into the break only one goal down.
After the interval, Slot’s team found themselves in a promising position but wasted a chance when Hugo Ekitike fired high over the bar. Dembélé then missed a fantastic opportunity to extend PSG’s lead after failing to convert a cut-back from Nuno Mendes.
The second goal finally arrived in the 65th minute, courtesy of Kvaratskhelia.
Superbly assisted by Joao Neves, the Georgian glided into the box with ease before slotting his close-range shot beyond Mamardashvili.

There was a moment of potential disaster for Liverpool when referee José María Sánchez awarded a penalty for a foul by Ibrahima Konate on Warren Zaire-Emery. However, thanks to VAR intervention, the decision was rightly overturned.
As the match neared its conclusion, Luis Enrique’s side looked to add to their tally, with Dembélé striking the woodwork, but PSG had to be satisfied with just two goals on the evening.
Although Slot’s team will head back to Merseyside feeling disappointed, they still have a chance to fight for a semi-final spot in the second leg next week at Anfield.

However, Liverpool’s fifth defeat in six away matches makes for grim reading, adding to a disheartening season that continues to disappoint. Meanwhile, PSG’s victory ensures they remain on track to defend their title, having secured five consecutive wins across all competitions.
