Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, expressed his astonishment at the prospect of Hugo Ekitike playing again this season after the forward was stretchered off during his team’s Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain.
The sight of Ekitike suffering a serious injury added to the woes of the English champions, as Ousmane Dembele’s brace secured a 2-0 victory at Anfield for the French team, who advanced to the semi-finals with a 4-0 aggregate win.
The former PSG forward collapsed in agony, clutching his lower right leg amid fears of a ruptured Achilles tendon, a setback that could jeopardise his chances of participating in the World Cup with France.
“It appears to be quite serious, but it’s challenging for me to assess the extent,” Slot commented.
“We will conduct further examinations tomorrow. We’ll just have to wait and see, but the outlook isn’t promising.”
Slot had partnered Ekitike with Alexander Isak, who was making his first start since suffering a broken leg in December.
Injuries have significantly impacted what has been a frustrating season for the Reds, currently sitting fifth in the Premier League and destined to conclude the campaign without any trophies.
“We’ve dealt with losing players frequently this season, but this is particularly tough for him because no one wants to face injury, especially at such a crucial point in the season,” Slot added.
“On a positive note, it’s good to have Alex back.”
