Liverpool’s gaffer Arne Slot expressed his astonishment at the likelihood of Hugo Ekitike making another appearance this season, following the forward being stretchered off during the Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
Ekitike’s potentially serious injury added to the woes of the English champions, as Ousmane Dembele’s brace secured a 2-0 victory at Anfield for the defending champions, who advanced to the semi-finals with a 4-0 aggregate score.
The ex-PSG forward collapsed, clutching his lower right leg, with fears of a ruptured Achilles tendon that might also jeopardise his chances of being part of the French squad for the World Cup.
“It appears to be quite serious, but it’s hard for me to determine the extent,” commented Slot.
“We’ll conduct further examinations tomorrow. Let’s wait and see, but it doesn’t look promising.”
Slot had opted to pair Ekitike with Alexander Isak up front, who was making his first start since suffering a broken leg in December.
The Reds’ campaign has been marred by injuries, leaving them sitting fifth in the Premier League, and it looks increasingly likely they will finish the season without any silverware.
“Losing a player has been a recurring issue for us this season, but it hits especially hard for him, as no player wants to face injury, particularly at this crucial stage of the season,” Slot added.
“On a positive note, Alex is back.”
