Liverpool drew ever closer to reclaiming the Premier League title with a 1-0 victory in the Merseyside derby against Everton, ending the Toffees’ impressive nine-match unbeaten streak in the league.
As is customary, the Merseyside derby was a fiery affair, and this 246th encounter was no exception. In their previous clash, where Everton only had to traverse Stanley Park to confront Liverpool, James Tarkowski marked his presence with a memorable last-gasp equaliser. This time, however, he made his intentions clear within the first 10 minutes with a reckless calf-high challenge on Alexis Mac Allister, which astonishingly only garnered a yellow card despite VAR scrutiny—his justification being that he had won the ball.
While the Anfield supporters fumed over the lack of a red card, they were left holding their breath moments later when Tarkowski delivered a pinpoint pass behind the Liverpool defence for Beto, who was poised to score in front of the Kop. Fortunately for Liverpool fans, the assistant referee’s flag was raised, deflating Beto’s celebration and keeping the game goalless.
Beto was soon presented with another golden opportunity, this time running onside, but despite Abdoulaye Doucouré playing him through on goal, he could only look on in frustration as his shot hit the post.
Everton manager David Moyes was left lamenting these squandered chances, feeling the pressure as he sought a breakthrough in a venue where he had previously failed to secure a win in 19 visits.
His worst fears materialised just 15 minutes after the interval when Diogo Jota seized on a loose ball, danced his way into the box, and fired home to send the Anfield crowd into raptures.
With the Toffees facing an uphill battle to get back into the contest, the return of Iliman Ndiaye from injury offered a much-needed boost, yet he couldn’t turn the tide in Everton’s favour.

As the game drew to a close, maintaining a one-goal lead was bound to make the Anfield crowd a bit anxious, but Luis Díaz sought to ease their nerves when his goal-bound attempt was denied on the line by Tarkowski with just ten minutes remaining.
In the end, Liverpool held firm to protect their lead, marking their 26th consecutive unbeaten league game, while Everton missed the chance to avoid defeat in both Merseyside derbies during a single season for the first time since 2020/21.
