Bayern Munich’s manager Vincent Kompany dismissed inquiries regarding his 40th birthday celebrations, asserting that his primary focus is on progressing further towards clinching the Bundesliga title ahead of their Champions League clash with Real Madrid next week.
Bayern, who are set to face St. Pauli on Saturday, currently boast a nine-point lead in the league with six matches remaining. They hold a 2-1 advantage over Real in their quarter-final after an impressive victory at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.
“The short answer is no,” said Kompany, whose birthday was on Friday, when questioned about any plans for celebrations.
“Our sole aim is to secure the three points against St. Pauli. Usually, I celebrate my birthdays during the semi-finals and quarter-finals, so winning in these instances feels like an added bonus.
“I’m trying to steer clear of all the birthday distractions,” he continued. “We’re focused on our priorities. There will be plenty of emotions in the coming days. Perhaps a glass of red wine tonight, but right now, it’s all about preparing for the match.”
Bayern remain in contention for three trophies, with a German Cup semi-final against Bayer Leverkusen scheduled for April 22.
Additionally, they have the opportunity to set a new record for the most league goals in a season this Saturday, having scored 100 goals so far, just one shy of matching the all-time record.
Kompany indicated that he may make adjustments to his starting lineup for the fixture against St. Pauli.
“I aim to assemble a team that can maintain the same level of intensity and focus we displayed in Madrid. Normally, this isn’t an issue for us, but right now, I need to consider not only quality but also how fresh each player is,” he remarked.
“Regardless of any changes we might implement, we don’t want to lose what we’ve gained.”
Regarding the return leg against Real next Wednesday, Kompany stressed that only victory is acceptable.
“We won in Bernabeu, and next week we aim to win at home. My thoughts on this matter are quite straightforward,” he concluded.
