Inter Milan hold the upper hand in this UEFA Champions League Round of 16 encounter following a convincing 2-0 triumph over Feyenoord Rotterdam. This victory marks their impressive unbeaten streak against Dutch teams in European competition, now extending to 12 matches, thereby inching them closer to a spot in the quarter-finals.
After previously eliminating another Milan club from the Champions League earlier in the season, Feyenoord was keen on achieving a similar feat against Inter in this knockout stage.
They nearly made a dream start, countering their Italian opponents and putting goalkeeper Josep Martinez to the test when Ibrahim Osman challenged him within the first five minutes.
While Inter struggled to establish dominance during the first half, they received a fortunate opportunity at the 30-minute mark when Marcus Thuram broke free and squared the ball for Lautaro Martinez, who was thwarted by a remarkable last-minute block that prevented a certain goal.
However, this only delayed the inevitable for the hosts, who found themselves trailing just before half-time.
Nicolo Barella orchestrated the opening goal, delivering a pinpoint cross to the back post where Thuram acrobatically converted to put Inter in front.
Inter nearly doubled their lead shortly after, but Martinez’s on-target effort was expertly saved by Timon Wellenreuther.
The Argentine striker eventually found the net within five minutes of the second half, seizing on a loose ball inside the area to fire it high into the net.
Faced with a two-goal deficit, Feyenoord’s hopes were dwindling, and their situation worsened when Thuram was brought down in the penalty area.
Defender Jeyland Mitchell thought he escaped sanction, but a quick VAR review confirmed he had fouled the Frenchman. Piotr Zielinski stepped up to take the resulting penalty, only for Wellenreuther to produce an outstanding save, denying him a goal.
Feyenoord believed they deserved a penalty themselves just moments later when Ayase Ueda fell under a challenge from Stefan de Vrij, but referee Espen Eskas was unmoved by their claims.
In a desperate late surge, Feyenoord sought to find a goal that could rekindle their hopes ahead of the second leg, but they ultimately came up short.
This leaves them with a significant challenge in the upcoming return fixture, a daunting task given that Inter have been unbeaten in home Champions League matches since September 2022, and have yet to lose by a three-goal margin.
