Nigerian international and Rangers defender Leon Balogun, aged 36, has shared an uplifting update regarding his injury status, including a rough estimate for his return to the pitch.
The former Brighton & Hove Albion star has been out of action since he picked up an injury during a match against Manchester United at Old Trafford back in January.
Concerns arose during the Europa League clash when Balogun was observed limping after clearing the ball from Joshua Zirkzee in the first half.
He was substituted for fellow Northern Irish teammate Ross McCausland, and Rangers ultimately succumbed to a 2-1 defeat, which included an own goal by Jack Butland and a late winner from Bruno Fernandes.
After sitting out four matches for Philippe Clement’s squad, the defender provided an update on his recovery when quizzed about his injury.
“I’m in the final stages of my recovery because I played through pain in two games, including the one against Manchester United.
“From my experience, I must say it’s a great feeling, and I’m eager to be back on the training ground very soon.”
Without Balogun, Rangers have managed to secure victory in three of their last four outings, conceding a mere three goals as they chase both Scottish and European triumph.
Rangers’ manager Philippe Clement has recently revealed that the Super Eagle is poised to return to training within the next few days.
“In about a week, I hope to see Dujon Sterling and Leon Balogun back with us. Ridvan (Yilmaz) has already resumed training,” he stated, according to Rangers Review.
“Leon King is also back in training following his recovery, whereas some others will take a little longer.
“I don’t want to set a definite week on it, as I don’t wish to corner my medical team.”
Despite remaining unbeaten in their last eight league games, they trail Celtic by a daunting 13 points, and Balogun acknowledges that inconsistency has troubled their season thus far.
Rangers faced disappointment in the Scottish League Cup final against Celtic and were eliminated from the Scottish Cup in the fifth round. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about reclaiming the title while recognising the need for considerable improvement.
He remarked: “We have performed admirably in Europe but have struggled domestically due to our inconsistency.”
“We are lagging in the title race, but hope is not yet lost. We can still fight for success, as the players comprehend the stakes and are prepared to demonstrate it through sheer effort.”

Balogun also expressed his thoughts on the contributions of his teammate at Rangers and Nigeria, Cyriel Dessers, commending his dedication despite facing some criticism.
Even though Dessers has scored vital goals for the Gers and remains a key part of their offensive play, fans have voiced concerns regarding his consistency and impact.
Balogun praised Dessers for his essential role in the squad and highlighted the significance of his contributions across both domestic and European competitions.
“He’s been doing well. I don’t believe this season has been a walk in the park for him,” Balogun stated.
“As I mentioned earlier, he possesses remarkable grit and character, particularly given the tough reception he has received from the fans. The way he has addressed this challenge and his improved form in recent matches deserve recognition. Fair play to him.”
Dessers currently stands as Rangers’ top scorer this season, netting 14 goals across all competitions to date. He is anticipated to bolster his tally in the upcoming match against Hearts in the top flight on Sunday.
Earlier, Balogun, who has been absent from the Nigeria senior national team, acknowledged that returning to the squad poses a significant challenge.
He remarked: “Of course, my desire to rejoin the team doesn’t make it any easier. Yet, high competition is essential since we’re talking about the Super Eagles, not just any squad.”
“We aim to be the best in Africa. Therefore, getting into the team should be a tough task.”
