“Incredible!” | Adelaide United teenager reflects on whirlwind Isuzu UTE A-League debut
It’s difficult to find a more astonishing debut story this season.
Just under two hours before Adelaide United faced Newcastle Jets at Coopers Stadium on Saturday night, Harry Crawford was settled in the stands, preparing to enjoy the match.
However, everything changed when club captain Ryan Kitto suffered a warm-up injury.
Moments later, Crawford’s phone started ringing.
This call set off an extraordinary and unforeseen evening for the 18-year-old, who, just hours earlier, had played a full match for the club’s NPL team.

“I was involved in the NPL match against MetroStars and we secured a solid 2-1 victory,” Crawford shared with club media.
“I played the full 90 minutes at right-back. We wrapped up the game just after four o’clock, then I went straight to Coopers Stadium to watch the A-League match.”
“I arrived a bit earlier because I was scheduled for signings in the tent before the game. I was there by six o’clock, joining a few other players who weren’t in the squad.”
“Just as I finished the signings, I made my way behind the bench to take a seat. That’s when I received the call.”
“They asked if I had my boots – and luckily, since I live further north, I hadn’t taken them out of the car after the MetroStars game.”
“I confirmed I had them, so I dashed to my car, grabbed my boots, and prepared to sit on the bench.”
“While fetching my boots, I thought I should call my parents. They were both thrilled. Mum turned the game on immediately, while Dad rushed to the stadium as fast as he could.”
“Dad scarcely made it in time, but Mum had to stay home because of an early work shift. Thankfully, Dad got there just in the nick of time.”
“My first feeling was pure excitement; I couldn’t quite believe it. Nerves soon crept in, but as I sat on the bench, my confidence began to build.”
Even though Saturday night’s 2-1 loss to Adelaide United wasn’t Crawford’s inaugural experience in the first team—having debuted in the Australia Cup against Blacktown City earlier in July 2024—it was a significant moment for the young talent.
As he took his place on the bench, a dream Isuzu UTE A-League debut seemed improbable—at least in his mind.
“I honestly didn’t think I’d get to play,” Crawford admitted. “I figured I’d just be there in case of a last-minute sub, considering I’d played a full match earlier.”
“But when they called me to come on, it was an unbelievable experience.”

Crawford entered the field in the 79th minute, substituting for Dylan Pierias, alongside NPL teammate Amlani Tatu, who also made his league debut for the Reds.
Standing on the touchline waiting for this notable moment in his burgeoning career, Crawford recognised the uniqueness of sharing his debut with Tatu, a fellow academy graduate.
“Having played alongside him in the NPL for the past two years made it a special experience,” Crawford reflected.
“Just being on the bench was fantastic, but when they announced, ‘You’re coming on’, it was simply brilliant. Sharing the debut with him made it even more special, as he’s worked tirelessly in training and truly deserves this.”
