Arsenal finally secured their first victory in a European knockout match in Portugal, edging Sporting CP 1-0 in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final at the Estadio José Alvalade, thanks to a dramatic injury-time goal from Kai Havertz.
The match began cautiously for both teams, but Maxi Araujo made an explosive attempt with a left-footed strike that David Raya managed to deflect onto the crossbar.
It took Arsenal around 10 minutes to register their first opportunity, with Viktor Gyökeres, a former Sporting player, being easily held off from the goal by the defence.
Noni Madueke, filling in for the injured Bukayo Saka, came close to scoring an Olympic goal from a corner, hitting the crossbar with his effort.
Sporting were content to switch to a five-man defence whenever Arsenal mounted an attack, stifling the North Londoners’ rhythm.
As the first half progressed, the Portuguese side struggled to involve their key player, Luis Suarez, managing only three touches in Arsenal’s penalty area during the first 45 minutes.
By the time the half-time whistle blew, neither team had asserted themselves significantly, although Arsenal were likely the more frustrated outfit having failed to capitalise on nine crosses into the box.

The pattern of play continued into the second half, with Declan Rice playing a vital role in stifling Sporting’s advances.
A well-placed free-kick from Martin Ødegaard forced Rui Silva to stay alert, while a low drive from Trincao had Raya scrambling across the goal line.
Shortly after the hour mark, Martin Zubimendi thought he had put Arsenal ahead with a stunning curling shot from outside the box, only for it to be chalked off for offside.
Rice was influential in the midfield, reclaiming possession an impressive 13 times, and contributing significantly to Arsenal’s performance.
With just seven minutes left on the clock, Raya came up big for the Gunners once again, making a fantastic one-handed save from Geny Catamo’s clever header.
In a dramatic twist, with only two minutes of injury time remaining, Havertz struck a low shot that silenced the home crowd and clinched a crucial victory for Arsenal.
This result leaves Sporting yet to win in eight encounters against Arsenal (D4, L4), but the way in which they managed to contain the Gunners for long stretches of the match will give them confidence for the return leg at the Emirates Stadium.
