Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, has urged fans to approach their Premier League clash against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday as though it were a “final,” as his team pursues qualification for next season’s Champions League.
Following their 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday, City currently occupies fourth place in the league with 58 points from 33 matches, just one point ahead of seventh-placed Villa. The top five teams earn a spot in the Champions League.
“This is a final and we need our supporters, because I believe our fans are eager for another season in the Champions League,” Guardiola expressed to the media.
“We hope they can rally behind us from the very first minute. Don’t hold back. At times we can be a bit careless, sometimes we don’t perform at our best, but right now we need them – we need their support desperately to create noise and be present throughout the match, as it is indeed a final for us.”
Last time the teams met in December, Villa secured a 2-1 victory, and Guardiola cautioned that Tuesday’s encounter would prove challenging, referencing Villa’s performance in their recent 5-4 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals.
“(Villa) is a contender for Champions League qualification, and the way they performed in both matches against my friend Luis Enrique and PSG was truly impressive,” Guardiola noted.
“They can adopt a low block if needed, but when they choose to attack, with their capabilities, speed, set pieces, and organisational structure…”
The Spaniard also praised Nico O’Reilly, encouraging the 20-year-old midfielder to enhance his technical and physical skills.
O’Reilly, who has recently been playing out of position at left-back, shone in the win over Everton, netting the opening goal.
“He needs to assess whether he can handle playing every three days, similar to how Bernardo (Silva), Kevin (De Bruyne), and Ruben (Dias) have demonstrated,” Guardiola explained.
“I’m unsure if these young players are capable of playing three matches a week for an extended period. I admire that he’s adapting to a position he’s unfamiliar with and is actively learning.
“Certainly he needs to improve (defensively), but with the ball he’s quite good… He has a powerful shot, exhibits quality in tight spaces, and is contributing significantly to our efforts.”
