Go Ahead Eagles clinched their inaugural KNVB Beker title in the club’s history, triumphing over AZ 4-2 on penalties in the final held in Rotterdam on Monday.
AZ manager Maarten Martens was forced to make adjustments with captain Jordy Clasie sidelined due to injury and centre-back Alexandre Penetra suspended. He opted to include 18-year-old Kees Smit alongside veteran Bruno Martins Indi to bolster the lineup.
On the flip side, Go Ahead Eagles head coach Paul Simonis also faced challenges, having to cope without young Danish talent Jakob Breum and Indonesian international Dean James, instead giving starting roles to Milan Smit and Aske Adelgaard.
The match kicked off in a high tempo, with both teams pushing forward eagerly in front of a full house at De Kuip. It was Norwegian full-back David Moller Wolfe who registered the first strike on goal, catching the Eagles’ defence off-guard. Shortly after, ex-Tottenham player Troy Parrott tested keeper Jari De Busser with a curled shot that struck the post after the Belgian managed to get a fingertip to it.
As the game wore on, Go Ahead Eagles’ Victor Edvardsen found himself in a promising position just before half-time, but the Swedish forward turned midfielder failed to capitalise on a one-on-one with Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro. The Eagles had a couple of minor chances but both teams went into the break without a goal.
The referee Danny Makkelie temporarily halted the match after Go Ahead Eagles fans lit fireworks. Upon resuming play, the match escalated when Joris Kramer miscalculated his clearance attempt, resulting in a foul on AZ winger Ernest Poku. Following a VAR review, Makkelie awarded a penalty — the first of its kind in a KNVB Beker final in over two decades.
Although Troy Parrott’s initial penalty was saved, a subsequent VAR check revealed that Eagles winger Mathis Suray had encroached into the box prior to the shot, compelling Makkelie to order a retake. Parrott capitalised on this opportunity and secured a 1-0 lead for AZ in the 54th minute.
Focusing on counter-attacking tactics, AZ regrouped to create a solid defensive blockade, stifling the Eagles’ ability to play their typical free-flowing style.
Late drama
Substitute Soren Tengstedt had a crucial chance to equalise for Go Ahead Eagles mere seconds after entering the field, but he squandered his opportunity in front of an open net after Owusu-Oduro failed to clear. Jari De Busser then emerged as the saviour for Deventer, making two vital saves as the match drew to its climax.
Oscar Pettersson had a chance to level the score, yet the 20-year-old keeper Owusu-Oduro showcased remarkable reflexes to deny the Swede a crucial equaliser.
In a last-ditch effort deep into injury time, Go Ahead Eagles were awarded another penalty when AZ midfielder Peer Koopmeiners mishandled the ball in the air after a minor foul, leading Makkelie to point to the spot once again. Eagles captain Mats Deijl stepped up and scored, restoring parity for his side in the 99th minute.
As extra time unfolded in Rotterdam, AZ had the majority of chances with Eagles defender Gerrit Nauber almost conceding an own goal, while Zico Buurmeester narrowly missed the mark with a shot just over the bar. However, it was Pettersson from Eagles who had the greatest opportunity to put his team ahead, curling his shot just wide of Owusu-Oduro’s far post as the half-time break approached.
Penalties
In the dying minutes of the match, Eagles striker Milan Smit had a golden opportunity to score a late winner in the 119th minute, but his shot failed to hit the target. Mexx Meerdink came close with the final opportunity of the match, but once again it was Jari De Busser who stood in the way.
With a penalty shout rejected for AZ, the match proceeded to a tense shootout to determine the winner of the 106th KNVB Beker final.
The brilliant Belgian goalkeeper De Busser was the hero, saving AZ’s third penalty taken by Zico Buurmeester, pushing it away to the bottom left corner. His heroics continued as he denied Mayckel Lahdo, giving Eagles a chance to win it. Julius Dirksen stepped up for Go Ahead Eagles’ fourth penalty and converted, securing the club’s first major trophy in nearly a century.
Go Ahead Eagles celebrated their first KNVB Beker title in their first final since 1965. This victory secures their place in the League Phase of the UEFA Europa League, marking their inaugural entry into the European main draw.
