Getafe kept their hopes alive for European football with a slim 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad in LaLiga, climbing to sixth in the standings with only their third head-to-head win in the last twelve encounters.
Fresh off their Copa del Rey triumph against Atlético Madrid, Sociedad appeared to relish the celebrations over the weekend.
However, their first-half display suggested that they were still feeling the after-effects, as they struggled to make their mark on the match.
They were gifted an excellent chance to break the deadlock within the first 15 minutes when a penalty was awarded after Abdel Abqar handled a header from Brais Méndez.
Yet, when Méndez took the spot-kick, he could only strike the post, providing Getafe with a significant escape.

Orri Óskarsson was then thwarted by David Soria, shooting from a difficult angle, before Getafe took the lead just before the half-hour mark through a stroke of luck.
A hopeful cross from Juan Iglesias found Jon Gorrotxategi, who inadvertently flicked the ball towards goal, causing it to loop over Álex Remiro and into the net.
Following this, the remainder of the first half saw no notable chances, with La Real needing a significant uplift in performance to salvage something from the match after the break.
Sociedad made three substitutions in the early stages of the second half, with one notably, Ander Barrenetxea, coming close with a shot that went inches over the bar from within the box.
Barrenetxea was undoubtedly the most lively player for his team, despite entering as a substitute, but his energy did not convert into any clear chances, as Getafe maintained control.
Ultimately, Getafe looked comfortable holding onto their lead, now on track for a top 10 finish in the division for the first time since the 2019/20 season.
On the other hand, this was Sociedad’s first home defeat of 2026, but with silverware already in the cabinet, it’s unlikely to dampen their spirits.
Regardless of their final standing, La Real will compete in UEFA Europa League football next season, allowing them to enjoy the rest of the campaign without pressure.
