Fiorentina extended their unbeaten run to five matches in Serie A (W3, D2), pulling eight points clear of the relegation zone with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Lazio at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, thanks to a first-half goal from Robin Gosens.
While Lazio’s away fixtures are often tightly contested, evidenced by just five first-half goals across their 15 away league matches this season, it was the team from Rome that started the match on the front foot.
Fiorentina’s goalkeeper, David de Gea, was pivotal in keeping the score level, first leaping to deflect an early shot from Mattia Zaccagni, then skilfully blocking Matteo Cancellieri’s attempt just moments later.
The match reached the midpoint without any excitement, appearing lifeless, until suddenly, an unexpected breakthrough occurred.
Gosens outjumped Manuel Lazzari to connect with a cross from Jack Harrison and, although his header lacked power as it hit the ground, the placement was sufficient to beat Lazio’s goalkeeper Edoardo Motta.
Following a heavy midweek defeat to Crystal Palace that dashed their hopes in the UEFA Conference League, Fiorentina has now shifted its focus entirely to securing Serie A survival.
For much of the match, La Viola maintained control as they sought the crucial three points—though they had a moment of vulnerability in the 65th minute when Lazio appealed for a penalty, leading to a lengthy VAR review. However, referee Michael Fabbri adhered to his initial decision and declined the penalty.
Despite Lazio’s efforts to find their way back into the match, their attempts proved lacklustre and ineffective, managing only a single shot on target during the second half. As a result, Maurizio Sarri’s side saw their faint hopes of breaking into the top six evaporate under the damp Tuscany skies.

For the supporters at home, this victory marks another positive progression for the team after a rocky start to the season and a much-needed rebound following their dismal setback in England.
