Real Madrid defender Eder Militao will be sidelined for the World Cup after undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury, the Spanish club announced on Tuesday, marking a significant setback for both club and country with less than 50 days to go before the tournament kicks off on June 11.
“Eder Militao successfully underwent surgery today for a tear in the proximal biceps femoris tendon of his left leg. The procedure was carried out by Dr Lasse Lempainen under the guidance of Real Madrid’s medical team. Militao is set to begin his rehabilitation process in the days ahead,” the club stated in their announcement.
Militao experienced discomfort during a challenge just prior to halftime in last week’s match against Alaves and immediately indicated he needed to be substituted.
While it was initially believed that the 28-year-old might recover in time for the World Cup, subsequent examinations revealed a recurrence of the injury he first sustained in December.
In addition to this setback, Militao has endured two serious knee injuries in recent years.
